The relationship between wellbeing and learning

Henna Haapala, Teacher, Ph.D. (Sport and Health Sciences)

“Wellbeing and learning influence one another. Both academic research and common experience testify of this. Examining wellbeing within the context of learning is a fruitful way of approaching the promotion of wellbeing in school-aged children and youth. Children and youth have the ability to learn from their lives, habits, values, and appreciations - and especially of their opportunities to influence their choices concerning wellbeing. Wellbeing promoting pedagogy focuses on supporting learning, as well as increasing satisfaction and pleasant feelings. Pedagogy, thus outlined, enables the conditions for wellbeing and learning.”

The areas of my research and expertise are listed below. I will gladly discuss them in more detail.

  • Physical activity of children and youth
  • School wellbeing, social relationships of students
  • Student assessment, especially of physical and health education
  • Wellbeing promoting pedagogy and learning of wellbeing
